Workshop

Writers' Room

For the past decade, I've been leading workshops helping people write about meaningful times in their lives, using a method called Guided Autobiography, or GAB. I've had to stop leading GAB Workshops to focus more on my own writing, but I've found this great way to support and keep in touch with GAB and other writers. We call it Writers' Room. For a nominal fee, I organize and provide a space for...writing. Anything you are working on—memoir, fiction, short pieces, long pieces, poetry. Twice a week, for two hours per session, the Writers' Room door is open for writers who want an excuse to write, and a reason to claim the time. In addition, I occasionally give Craft Talks, and I offer writing prompts for those who want to write but aren't actively involved in a project. We who do it, love it. The energy, the feeling of commitment, the community.

The next round of Writers' Room will happen on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9:30am to 11:30am, September 16th to November 7th.

Fee for both sessions $160

Fee for Wednesday or Saturday only $80

"This has been a time to retreat from the noise and haste of the busy world. Time to think, time to journal about the process, to organize and edit, to revise and print. I've been surprised by the ideas that have surfaced and am thankful for the time to deeply consider them"

"The craft talks and the dedicated time have all helped. It's just good to feel part of doing something like this."

"it really helps to have the company of others who also want to work together. I need that support. This is brilliant."

It seems so odd yet so satisfying that we are sitting together without talking,

"I have loved this and will be there whenever it starts again."

Memoir in Progress

Ronnie's Reunion

Ronnie was a dad with kids of his own when he first met his biological dad who, as it turns out, is the oldest living, still gigging, jazz musician in the US. It's a whopper of a story filled with love and frustration, and the perils of trying to create a father-son relationship with a stranger—a man who missed the first 50 years of your life.

Ronnie, a past GAB participant, came to me when he decided he wanted to write about all this. He's a great storyteller but at that time, he'd only begun the writing part. We've been meeting on and off for three years now during which time we've documented what he's going through. He's shared many stories of the ups and downs of getting to know Marshall including spending many weekends travelling from his own home in Florida to see and care for Marshall, who lives in Philadelphia. Ronnie's talked about growing up in his adopted family, and what they have meant for him. I've been recording and transcribing our sessions, coding and creating summaries.

Seva Diaries

Seva is an organization dedicated to restoring sight and preventing blindness in the developing world. Marty Spencer is an ophthalmologist who has spent 40 years volunteering with Seva, keeping a journal throughout his travels and medical adventures. Marty has great stories to tell. Our challenge is to whittle those stories down from 368,000 words to 90,000. We can do it, I know we can.

MEMOIR in Progress

Hurricane Norbert

In 2008, Hurricane Norbert decimated the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, in Mexico. Reaching wind speeds of 135 mph, it is one of the strongest tropical cyclones in Mexico's history.

Donna McGee is a Canadian who calls Victoria, BC, her home, but she spends half her year, every year, living in the community of Alamos located in Mexico. Donna was there when the hurricane hit. She got through it okay, but the town was decimated. Through interviews with many of those directly affected and with photos documenting the destruction and recovery, Donna and fellow Alamos friend, Corina Herpel, have taken on telling the story of the night the hurricane hit and the months of recovery to rebuild the community. A daunting task; a daunting story. My job is to help them shape this story into one that does justice to what happened and makes readers want to learn more.
